A Family on FIRE

We’re a married couple living in Melbourne, Australia in our mid-30s with a toddler and a dog. Ms FireMum primarily writes on this blog. Both Mr FireDad and Ms FireMum work full time in corporate jobs. We don’t hate our jobs, but it would be nice to have the option to choose to work, instead of needing to work. Our parents taught us the importance of putting money away for a rainy day, and passive investing. In our minds we always thought that the reason we invested was to avoid being on the pension (which is a great safety net provided by the Australian Government, but really not enough to live on comfortably). So we started investing in property in our mid twenties with not much of a plan beyond thinking that we’d pay it off in 30 years, and that would allow us to retire comfortably at 60. Then I stumbled across the FIRE movement, and found out that some people were able to retire in their 30s. I thought that was impossible without winning the lottery or coming into a large inheritance, but the more I read about FIRE, and, the more hooked I became. Why target financial freedom at 60, when we could aim for 50? Or even 40?

30Sum

Hello everyone, my name is Jared. There is a lot of emphasis online about retired at 30! Well I’m 31, and not retired. In fact, my goal has always been to have the option to retire by 45 from the time I started working. I have a wife, and two young boys. I know I am not going to retire in my early 30’s because I have a family to raise and bills to pay, but my goal of 45 is still in sight. This blog is to document my journey to finding financial independence while having dependents and offering tips and interesting ideas to you. I started with nothing, and have been working since I was 12. My first job was working teaching kids how to swim at the local swim club, from there I moved on to working in fast food, busing tables at a nice Italian restaurant, and eventually working as an apprentice electrician. I acquired my Journeyman Electrical License at the age of 22. Most recently I work in Construction Management overseeing the daily construction of various project types.

10 Year Target

I’m a Norwegian guy in my early 30’s. My interests are photography, nice whisky, watches, technology, but perhaps more on that later, because my biggest interest is finance and growth of money. Inspired by the book “Think and Grow Rich”, by Napoleon Hill, I wrote down a money target a few years ago. This target I was able to reach and I am now defining my new goal. My investments are about to hit 2 million kroner (? $230,000) distributed in stocks, mutual funds, saving accounts and a few other investments. My next goal is to reach 6,5 million kroner (? $745,000) within the next 10 years.
