Frugal Fun

Just because you’re on a budget doesn’t mean that you can’t have any fun. There’s plenty to do on nights and weekends without breaking the bank. I know, because I’d much rather be out and about on a Saturday instead of hiding in my house, especially now that warmer weather is headed our way. Here are some ideas to consider when searching for cheap entertainment.

Catch a flick. Most movie theaters have discounted showings if you go in the morning or afternoon (usually before 4:00pm). Catch an early show to save a few bucks and you’ll still have your whole evening free. Redbox is another one of my favorite options. You can see most newer releases, as well as some older favorites, for less than $1.50 per night. Check their website to see what they have in stock and if it’s available near you!

Food and drink specials. A ton of restaurants offer Happy Hour when you can get half-price or discounted drinks and appetizers during certain times. This is also a great way to try out new places!

Community days. Many museums and art galleries have certain days or hours that are open to the general public for free or at a discounted price. Take advantage of this to explore new spaces that you might not ordinarily go to.

Festivals and fairs. This is a great way to connect to the community you live in, as well as enjoy live entertainment and cheap eats. Who doesn’t love a good funnel cake?!

Explore your local parks. Many local, city, state, or national parks offer a variety of activities for a low cost. Some offer swimming, fishing, kayaking, paddle boats, guided tours, and horseback riding.

Learn something. Many local community colleges and universities offer free or discounted courses that are open to the public. Find out more about something you’ve always wanted to do – learn to cook, grow a garden, or speak a different language.

Invite friends over. Have everyone bring a dish or drinks to share and you’ve already covered the cost of food. If you’re looking for more than good conversation, get out some games for some friendly competition. Extra creativity points for hosting a theme night!

Often times, the hardest part of planning something fun is just thinking of the idea to begin with, so get creative and share your frugal fun ideas with us!
