Big Purchases and Your Budget

We are officially moving next week! While we may have ended up in an unexpected place at an unexpected time, we’re very happy with our decision and we’re so excited to have a larger space to call our own. I’ve been in full-on homeowner mode lately, and I can’t wait to make a few changes to fit our new place. My husband has had to reel me in repeatedly because we want to make smart, affordable updates over a reasonable amount of time, but I tend to leave the gates running at full force. While I’ve been budgeting for the move, I want to make sure that we’re making the right decisions for right now, and that means spending money wisely. Before I make an expensive purchase, I ask myself the questions I’m sharing with you below. Think about them the next time you’re getting ready to purchase any big-ticket items.

Do I need it? It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of something new, and it’s only normal to want to update your spaces to fit the feel of your life in a new place. Instead of going crazy with a credit card, focus on making purchases that are essential to your day-to-day living. While you might really, really want a comfy new couch to replace your old one, you should probably be sure that you’re not missing any vital household items first.

Can I afford it? Do you have the cash to buy this item? If you have to put it on a credit card or survive on Ramen Noodles for the rest of the month in order to pay for it, then you can’t afford it. Step back and figure out a way to save up or budget for it.

Will I still love it tomorrow? Being strict with my budget has made me more conscious of my spending now, and I refuse to spend money on anything that I don’t really love. Expensive items that are expected to last are at the top of my list of considerations. If you’re making a big purchase, be sure that it’s something you can live with for the foreseeable future. Sticking to timeless pieces and neutral colors can get you through at least one move or redecoration, allowing you to get your money’s worth.

Will it hold up to long-term wear and tear? A high price doesn’t always guarantee high quality. Make sure that this item can stand up to the normal wear of your household. Only invest in pieces you won’t need to repeatedly replace.

Can I find a more affordable alternative? You’ve found a look you love, but can you find that same look for less? Before you splurge, check out some cheaper options to see if you can find similar pieces, or search the web for some DIY options. I have Pottery Barn taste and an Ikea budget, so I often check discount stores or the sale section in search of similarities. One day I’ll convince my husband to take up woodworking and have him make all of our furniture, but for now, I’ll work with what I can find.

What do you take into consideration before making a big purchase?
